“Jack did a nice job with our defense,” said John Elway, the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations, according to The Denver Post. “We had a lot of injuries on that defensive side and Jack did a good job holding that side together. Even in the Super Bowl, our defense kept us in the game in the first half.”
Under Del Rio, the Broncos finished 19th in the NFL in total defense, after finishing second in 2012. Del Rio also served as the team’s interim head coach in 2013, after John Fox underwent heart surgery. The Broncos went 3-1 with Del Rio as head coach.
Before coming to Denver, Del Rio was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003-11. During the NFL season, he briefly interviewed for the head-coaching position at USC, which eventually hired Steve Sarkisian.
