Broncos Defense Jumps on Peyton's Rally, Finish Chiefs off

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - After leading the 11th fourth-quarter or overtime game-winning or -tying drive in his +Denver Broncos career and eclipsing the 70,000 career-passing mark, it's easy to see why quarterback Peyton Manning says that Thursday's stunning 31-24 win over divisional foe +Kansas City Chiefs is one he'll never forget.

"To win a division game on the road, [in] a great atmosphere," said Manning. "This place is always just a great place to play football and the crowd was rocking tonight and they were into it. I thought it was two really good teams battling out there and we were real fortunate to come up on top. But this is one that you'll always remember. Certainly the way it ended."

Manning isn't exaggerating about the Broncos' wild ending, either. H/T - +The Denver Post

Broncos Offense Clicks at right time, defense pounces on its Chances to Stun AFC West foe, Chiefs, in Thriller

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Peyton Manning made history Thursday night. And not by becoming the first player to announce his retirement during a game. After persistent talk of his demise, Manning showed resolve in the +Denver Broncos' 31-24 victory over the +Kansas City Chiefs that will long be remembered for Denver's two touchdowns in nine seconds that came in the last minute of the AFC West game.

With the Broncos trailing 14-0, criticism of Manning could be heard from Arrowhead Stadium to old Mile High. Legends, outside of John Elway, rarely exit on their own terms. There's an awkward dance of diminished skills and hurt feelings. Manning will leave someday. But not on this day.

"This guy took a lot of (bleep) this week," coach Gary Kubiak said as he gave Manning a game ball, as shown on postgame video posted online by the Broncos.

Manning beat the Chiefs for a ninth consecutive time — no other quarterback has done that — and the Broncos won their 13th consecutive division road game, an NFL record... H/T +The Denver Post - Original (rest of story) click here

Vance Walker has Chance at Redemption: Plus, he chose Mile High over Seahawks (+Denver Post)

Vance Walker brings value, versatility in attempt to rebound with Broncos

Defensive end was used sparingly with Kansas City Chiefs last season

Broncos sign DE Vance Walker to two-year, $4M contract

Mar 11:
DE Vance Walker to visit with Broncos this week

Vance Walker found obscurity in Kansas City.

It wasn't supposed to happen this way. The Chiefs chased Walker in free agency last March, turning him into their prized offseason acquisition, and almost immediately he became lost on their depth chart.

Walker played well. If he played. He started twice and logged more than 20 snaps in only three games. Seen as a catalyst to an evolving defensive line mix, he turned into a casualty, released after one year.

"I dealt with that when it happened. It's an unfortunate situation. I can complain about it, but I've let it go months ago," Walker said last week.

For the Broncos, Walker's inability to crack the Chiefs' rotation might be the best thing to happen for them. He remained a productive, if sparingly-used player, last season. The Chiefs guaranteed Walker $3.75 million on a three-year, $13.75-million contract. The Broncos  kept him from signing with the Seahawks when he agreed to a two-year, $4-million contract with a $1.5-million signing bonus.

The +Denver Broncos are expected to sign free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Albert Breer of NFL Network later reported an agreement to terms.

The former +Pittsburgh Steelers wideout reportedly was scheduled to visit the 49ers Saturday after previous meetings with the +Jacksonville Jaguars  and +Kansas City Chiefs.

On Friday, ESPN’s Scott Brown reported some NFL teams were wary of medical concerns surrounding Sanders including a screw in each foot. He has not missed a game in each of the past two seasons after missing eight games in his first two NFL seasons.

Sanders, who turns 27 on Monday, recorded career bests in receptions (67), receiving yards (740) and touchdown catches (six) in his first season as a fulltime starter.

He reportedly is believed to be seeking a contract similar to the five-year, $31.5 million deal ($13.25 million guaranteed) given former Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate by the Lions earlier this week.

The free agent market for receivers was reduced Saturday morning when the Patriots re-signed Julian Edelman. The Broncos are likely looking at Sanders as an option after receiver Eric Decker signed a five-year, $36.25M deal with the Jets on Thursday.

Broncos Prep Week 14 in Review

Joan Niiesen from The Denver Post reported:

In the week leading up to facing the Titans in Week 13, things were pretty uneventful at Dove Valley. Monday morning for once brought no new major injuries, with the biggest worry for the week by far the frigid temperatures. Coach John Fox also returned to his duties after four weeks away, which slotted Jack Del Rio back into his role of just defensive coordinator.
The Broncos will face the Titans at 2:05 p.m. Sunday. For those of you smart enough to know that standing for hours in single-digit temperatures is perhaps an unwise move, it’ll be broadcast on CBS.

Monday: Fox returned to Dove Valley Monday morning and resumed his duties as the team’s head coach. Fox addressed the media for about 25 minutes, talking about everything from the stress of being away to what he’s seen in recent games. In more good news for the Broncos, there were no major injuries from Sunday’s game, a rare occurrence after injuries have dominated recent Mondays.
Tuesday: The Broncos had Tuesday off, and it was for the most part a quiet day, which has been unusual of late.

Wednesday: The Broncos practiced indoors on Wednesday, their first such practice of 2013. With temperatures in the single-digits and snow falling strong enough to impede visibility, going outdoors simply wasn’t an option. Wednesday also marked Fox’s first practice since his bye-week heart surgery and another day off for Peyton Manning.

Thursday: The Broncos practiced outside Thursday after being relegated to the indoors Wednesday. In single-digit temperatures, Manning did not actually disintigrate into a cloud of dust, shocking all the cold-weather naysayers. He practiced in full, as did Joel Dreessen, who also missed Wednesday. Only Derek Wolfe and Trindon Holliday missed practice, and only Demaryius Thomas was limited.

Friday: Friday was a relatively uneventful day at the Broncos’ facility, apart from the coldest temperatures yet of the week. Only Derek Wolfe missed the team’s final practice before it faces Tennessee on Sunday.

BRONCOS WR ERIC DECKER NAMED AFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, the NFL informed the Broncos on Wednesday.

Decker caught eight passes for 174 yards (21.8 avg.) and a franchise-record four touchdowns in Denver’s 35-28 win against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. His three second-half scores helped the Broncos overcome an early 14-point deficit to capture their 10th consecutive win in divisional play.

His four receiving touchdowns equaled the most by a player in the NFL this season (Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones vs. NYJ, 10/27/13) and represented the highest total in a road game in more than six years (Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss at Buf., 11/18/07). Decker’s performance also marked just the 12 time in NFL history a player has totaled at least 170 receiving yards and four touchdowns in a single game.

Decker’s accomplishment represents the fourth Offensive Player of the Week recognition for a Bronco this season (Peyton Manning, Weeks 1 & 3; Demaryius Thomas, Week 10) and the 52nd in team history since the award was initiated in 1984.
